The Haemodialysis Unit opened at The York Hospital in January 1999. The Unit accepts patients from York, Selby, Harrogate, Malton, Pickering and surrounding areas. The Unit is open Monday to Saturday from 7am - 11pm. The patients generally require their dialysis treatment 3 times per week, but their Renal Consultant determines each patient's dialysis requirements.
We operate 3 dialysis shifts per day, one in the morning, one in the afternoon and one in the evening. During Haemodialysis the patient's blood is filtered to remove toxins, excess fluid and waste products. This involves accessing the patient's blood supply. The treatment will normally take 4 hours. An "artificial kidney machine" performs dialysis.

Peritoneal dialysis specialist nurses (Maxine Brown, Ruth Mear, Liz Green and Pam Davison) provide training, support, advice and information to patients and carers having peritoneal dialysis.
There is a 24 hour on call service and staff can be accessed during office hours on 01904 726329.
Included in this service are the facilitation of a Patient Support Group for people on peritoneal dialysis and their families, this can also be accessed by people who are not yet currently on dialysis. The support group is evaluated by patients and staff as part of the user involvement process and patients are actively involved in giving feedback regarding the service through questionnaires. Also as part of this support group the peritoneal dialysis nursing staff are involved in the patients newsletter through circulation and contributions.
Renal Specialist Nurses Maggie Higginbotham and Hazel Wootton provide care and support for predialysis and transplant patients. We also give pre-dialysis counselling to patients and their families regarding all aspects of living with kidney failure, through discussion and access to relevant information. The team have contributed to York Renal Unit's publication of its own booklet 'Living With Kidney Failure' - available to all patients nearing dialysis and on dialysis.
