We offer a high quality Respiratory Medicine service covering all aspects of the specialty including;

airways diseases (Asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease)
interstitial lung diseases (Extrinsic Allergic and Fibrosing Alveolitis)
lung cancer

sleep apnoea
tuberculosis
other lung infections

Services are provided by a multidisciplinary team including;

five Consultant Physicians
two Specialist Registrars
two Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeons (based in Castle Hill Hospital, Hull)
Consultant Oncologists; in collaboration with Consultant Radiologists
Respiratory Nurse Specialists
Physiotherapists
ward nursing staff
pulmonary physiology team

who all work together to provide optimum management of York patients.

Where to find us

Clinics are held in the outpatient department at The York Hospital.

Inpatient care is primarily provided on ward 34, on the third floor of The York Hospital.

Diagnostic Fibreoptic Bronchoscopy is performed in the Endoscopy Unit at The York Hospital.

Pulmonary function tests are performed in the cardiorespiratory department, near the main reception at The York Hospital.

Respiratory nurse specialists

There are a number of highly trained nurses working in specialist areas within respiratory medicine, including asthma, COPD, lung cancer, sleep services and cystic fibrosis. They run their own outpatient services and work closely with the respiratory team as a whole.

Respiratory Physiotherapy

Led by Kevin Wilson, the respiratory physiotherapy team provides a highly specialist assessment and treatment of respiratory conditions and rehabilitation needs.

Specialist Registrars

Two registrars from the Yorkshire Respiratory training scheme work closely with the consultants with inpatient, outpatient and bronchoscopy services. They are usually based in York for one year.
