Welcome to the Directorate of Anaesthetics, Theatres and Critical Care.
We provide a service predominantly within the surgical provision of the hospital. We have grown dramatically over the last few years, and we are proud of the care we provide to patients.
Whilst achievement of the national waiting list targets has been important, our current emphasis is on delivering quality as well. We are dedicating considerable energy in developing benchmarking across the whole range of our activities, and there is notable academic research taking place within the services we provide.
Clinical Director - Dr Ian Jackson
Lead clinician for anaesthesia - Dr Jonathan Wilson
Directorate manager - Richard Morris

We manage theatres, the day surgery unit, the intensive care and high dependency facilities, the admissions ward (ward 27), the waiting list team and much of the preoperative assessment service for the Trust.
York Hospital has a busy suite of 18 operating theatres situated in the main theatre suite and on the Day Unit. There are two Post-Anaesthetic Care Units (PACUs).
The theatres are divided into teams, covering the following specialities:
Orthopaedics and Trauma
Gynaecology and Urology
Head and Neck
General Surgery
Ophthalmic Surgery is performed in two dedicated Ophthalmic Theatres which are situated in the Ophthalmology Department. Please click here to visit this area.
We also have the following teams:
PACU (Post-Anaesthetic Care Unit)

Emergency Theatre Team
Each team has a Team Leader, Sisters, Staff Nurses and Health Care Assistants. The nursing team is supported by Operating Department Practitioners. The support team includes dedicated theatre porters, a storeperson and a Patient Services Assistant.
We have a team of four receptionists who staff the reception area from 8.00am - 6.00pm daily.
We provide a 24 hour emergency service. Our elective sessions are 9.00am - 1.00pm and 2.00pm - 6.00pm, Monday to Friday.
The main theatre suite is situated on the first floor of the hospital. The Day Unit is also situated on the first floor of the hospital, adjacent to Wards 11 and 14. Please click here for a hospital map.
