Cancer Care Centre

The Cancer Care Centre opened in 1998 with funds raised from an appeal by York Against Cancer and the York Press.

The centre provides information, support, complementary therapies and guidance for patients with cancer and their families.

The centre is located within The York Hospital and be accessed at Junction 5 from inside the hospital. The main entrance to the centre is opposite the new multistorey car park and is in between the Children's Centre and Magnolia Centre.

Claire and Michelle are the cancer care administrators and they will be there to welcome you to the centre and help in any way they can.

Centre services and activities

Complementary therapies

Aromatherapy massage, reflexology, reiki are available for all patients with cancer. Referral is strictly via the specialist nurse, consultant, general practitioner or psycho-oncologist.

Psycho-oncology service

The psycho-oncology service is based in the cancer care centre and offers specialist psychological and emotional support to patients and their families. A referral can be made by any health professional involved in the patient's care.


A wide range of free information is available on all aspects of cancer. This information can be accessed by calling in to the centre during opening ours or by telephoning 01904 721166.

Access to other services

Local self-help and support groups

There are local support groups for breast cancer, prostate cancer, stoma care, gynaecology, upper gastrointestinal cancer and laryngectomee. We also have information on other national support services and help lines.

Service for patients with temporary hair loss

A small number of patients may suffer hair loss as a result of their treatment for cancer.

The Cancer Care Centre offers support through the creative use of hats and scarves. The service is open Monday to Friday, no appointment is necessary.

Wigs are available via a referral from your consultant or specialist nurse. The current supplier of NHS wigs in York is Betty Browns situated on Clarence Street.

Benefits and money matters

A colleague from City of York Council attends the centre once a week to discuss benefits advice with patients and their families. Call 01904 721166 for an appointment.

Look Good Feel Better workshops

The centre hosts monthly beauty pampering workshops. For more information about 'Look Good Feel Better' click here. Contact the centre to book on to a workshop.
