The York Teaching Hospital Charity has launched 'The Star Appeal' to raise £300,000 to refurbish York Hospital's Stroke Rehabilitation unit. Stroke is the third largest cause of death and the single largest cause of adult disability in the UK. More than 150,000 people in the UK have a stroke each year.
The Stroke Rehabilitation unit located on ward 39 at York Hospital is desperately in need of modernisation / refurbishment to meet the specific needs of patients recovering from a stroke. The STAR Appeal is hoping to raise £300,000 to ensure these vital changes can be made for the benefit of our stroke patients.
The Stroke Rehabilitation unit at York Hospital provides vital care to patients who have suffered a stroke to ensure they can return home as quickly and safely as possible. Care in a stroke unit - with access to skilled, specialist staff and equipment - is the single most effective intervention for any stroke patient requiring hospital admission.
The STAR Appeal will ensure we can vastly improve the stroke rehabilitation area on ward 39 including a flat where patients will live independently whilst receiving support from expert staff. This will prepare them for returning home and ensure they feel confident and ready to overcome any challenges they will face as they return to their home and work life. We will also install a new kitchen and ceiling track hoists which will be used to transfer patients into and out of bed.
