Our services

Renal medicine

Our dialysis units have a strong focus on shared haemodialysis care, working in partnership with patients to promote greater treatment independence.

We have a strong renal multi-disciplinary team comprising specialist dieticians, pharmacists, psychologists, social workers, physiotherapists, an art worker and renal technicians who work closely together with the renal physicians and specialist nurses. Our inpatient base is on ward 33, York Hospital.

 The haemodialysis service currently comprises:

  • 13 station chronic dialysis unit and a four station acute dialysis unit in York Hospital
  • 10 station satellite haemodialysis unit in Scarborough Hospital (Fresenius)
  • 10 dialysis stations at the Easingwold satellite unit
  • Eight dialysis stations in the Harrogate satellite unit
  • Two dialysis stations in the Selby self-care unit
  • Four dialysis stations at the Harrogate self-care unit

Home haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis therapies are also provided by the renal service with over 360 patients under follow up following a successful kidney transplant.

The renal service provides consultant led care assisted by renal specialist nurses, working in pre dialysis, pre and post-transplant, conservative care, vascular access and anaemia management areas. A dedicated renal pharmacy team provides specialist support.

Outpatient clinics are run at York Hospital with outreach clinics at Harrogate, Selby, Malton and Scarborough Hospitals and Wetherby Health Centre.

The Renal Unit has an active research department recruiting to a number of local and national research projects.
