York Hospital is proud to have its very own choir for staff members. Music teacher and choir master, Katie Webster, leads the choir rehearsals in the chapel from 12.30pm – 1.30pm, every Thursday lunchtime.
The choir is free, don't worry if you haven't sung in a group before, there are no auditions and everyone is welcome. No note reading skills are necessary, just the desire to have a good go! Singing is long proven to improve mood and is a great aid to relieving stress. We have fun, first and foremost.
"What a lovely experience you are providing for a lots of otherwise stressed people on Thursday lunchtimes! I look forward to it all week"
If you're interested in attending, please contact Jess Sharp via email or by calling 01904 725265.
York Community Choir Festival, March 2017
York Hospital Staff Choir were proud to take part in York Community Choir Festival this year, performing alongside choirs from across the area.
This was the choir’s first solo performance and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it! As did the audience and organisers!
“We would like to personally thank you and your choir for taking part in last night’s Festival show. For your first show, that was amazing as if you had done that many times before. Your small group clearly enjoy singing and your relaxed style was a pleasant contrast to the more formal approach of some of the larger choirs. Sitting behind you, I could sense afterwards that you all enjoyed yourselves and got a buzz out of it.”
– David Stainton, join organiser of York Community Choir Festival.
York Hospital’s Staff Choir feature on BBC Radio York
In February 2016 the staff choir were contacted by Alex South, a Broadcast Assistant for BBC Radio York. Alex was keen to know more about our choir and came along one lunch time to make a recording for his series on workplace choirs. The series featured three choirs in total - The City of York Council Workplace Choir; The John Lewis Workplace Choir and our very own Hospital choir.
On Wednesday 17th February 2016 at 3.15pm our choir featured on BBC Radio York in a very inspiring and uplifting piece all about our workplace choir and what it means to us.
We’re very grateful to have been involved and hope others within York Hospital will be inspired to join our choir; perhaps we’ll have inspired those outside the NHS to start their own choirs in their place of work too!
To listen to the feature, please click here and scroll to 3hours 16 minutes. This link will expire in March 2016.
Sing as part of the choir at the NHS carol service in York Minster, Christmas 2016
Each year the Staff Choir joins other NHS choirs from across the region at the NHS carol service in York Minster. Further details will be posted here nearer the time.
York Hospital’s Staff Choir have again ventured onto the main corridor to share their musical talents with everyone. The choir performed two songs they’ve been working on recently, sounding fantastic as always!
If you’d like to join the staff choir, please contact Jess Sharp or come along one Thursday lunch time. Sessions are run on a drop in basis to suit those who can’t make the full hour so pop along to the Chapel any time between 12.30pm and 1.30pm; we’d love to welcome you along!
This month the choir perfected their rendition of ‘The Bare Necessities’ and performed it outside the Chapel on the Hospital’s main corridor. Look out for further mini performances as they continue to master new songs!
The Chapel opted for a more informal approach to their annual drop in carol service this year. ‘More Christmas Tea Vicar’ brought together carols from Staff Choir with the voices of those at the service.
The Staff Choir have been busy this Christmas, from performing alongside other hospitals from the region in the Minster Carol Service to their annual Christmas mini-tour around the communal spaces within York Hospital. They also performed at the drop in carol service held in the chapel, as pictured below.
Easter Performance 2014
The choir performed in a special performance over the Easter period.
Christmas Performance 2013
