Sue Symington, Chair

Sue Symington.JPGSue was appointed as Chair of our Trust on 1 April 2015. Prior to this she was a Non-executive Director and Vice Chairman of Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust and is a Non-executive Director for the Beverley Building Society. She was with the hospital since 2008 and the building society since 2013. Sue’s executive background is within the human resources arena where she was HR Director for Bettys and Taylors of Harrogate.

She has in the past developed her own businesses, including running a restaurant/hotel. More recently she has been undertaking a number key HR consultancy contracts in support of a number of private and public sector organisations.

Sue’s academic background is as a Chartered Fellow of the CIPD and a Chartered Director with the Institute of Directors and she has this year been awarded Chartered Director of the Year by the Institute of Directors.

Patrick Crowley, Chief Executivepatrickcrowley.jpg

Patrick has worked with the Trust since 1991 in a variety of finance and performance management roles, and was appointed to the role of Finance Director and Performance in 2001. He played a significant role in securing the required Trusts licence to become a Foundation Trust in April 2007 and was subsequently appointed Chief Executive in November 2007. Patrick led the successful acquisition of Scarborough & North East Yorkshire NHS Trust that was completed in July 2012 that followed on from securing community services for both the York and Scarborough localities. He is now wholly committed to establishing the enlarged Foundation Trust as major influence on the progressive development of whole system provision in North Yorkshire, building on York’s reputation as a high performing organisation. The Foundation Trust Board was recently recognised as the NHS Board of the Year by the NHS Leadership Academy.

He previously worked for the Ministry of Defence financial management development unit in Bath and in the private sector industry.

Mike Proctor, Deputy Chief Executive


Mike joined the NHS in 1975 as a trainee Operating Department Assistant in Sheffield. He undertook nurse training in 1982-85 before working in a variety of clinical roles at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield. He became a Charge Nurse in Intensive Care at Northern General Hospital, Sheffield in 1987. Mike left to join York Hospital in 1993 as a Clinical Nurse Specialist and then undertook various nurse and business manager roles at York before becoming Director of Nursing in 1998. Mike was then appointed to Chief Operating Officer/Deputy Chief Executive in 2005. He was appointed as Interim Chief Executive for SNEY in April 2011 – July 2012.  Mike's current portfolio includes Education, Organisational Development and Research.

Andrew Bertram, Director of Finance

andrewbertram.jpgAndrew Bertram took up the position of Finance Director for the Trust in January 2009. He has previously held a number of roles at the Trust, first joining in 1991 as a finance trainee as part of the NHS graduate management training scheme. On qualifying as an accountant, he undertook a number of finance manager roles supporting many of the Trust's clinical teams. He then moved away from finance taking a general management role as directorate manager for medicine. Andrew then joined the senior finance team; firstly at York, subsequently at Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust as their deputy finance director and then returning back to York to undertake his current role.

Andrew has responsibility for finance, contracting and procurement. He is a member of the Risk and Assurance Committee, the Efficiency Committee, attends Audit Committee and undertakes the Senior Information Risk Officer role for the Trust.

James Taylor, Medical DirectorJames Taylor.jpg

James was appointed Medical Director for the Trust in October 2015. He served as a Consultant Maxillofacial Surgeon with the Trust since 2001 providing services across North Yorkshire, including Scarborough and Bridlington, during that time.

James graduated with a dental degree from Glasgow University in 1983. He then worked in posts in Bristol, Manchester and greater London before re-entering medical school and graduating from Charing Cross and Westminster Medical school in 1993. He completed Basic Surgical Training in London and became the first Calman Higher Surgical Trainee in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Following spells at Kings, East Grinstead and Guildford Hospitals he graduated obtaining a CCST in August 2000. A visiting fellow to one of the many University medical schools in Shanghai in 2000, James obtained further experience in micro-vascular reconstruction of the head and neck Region.

When James joined the Trust, he initially specialised in Head and Neck cancer surgery but continued to practise most of his surgical training. He quickly developed an interest in management and worked in Lead and Clinical Director posts. He was appointed Deputy Medical Director and in 2014 until he was appointed Medical Director in October 2015.

Beverley Geary, Chief NurseBeverly Geary.jpg

Beverley Geary took up the position of Director of Nursing and Chief Nurse for the Trust in October 2014.

She started her nursing career in the acute sector; training as an RGN in 1987, working in cardiology and acute medicine before undertaking a post basic programme in mental health.

Beverley has worked in a number of hospitals around the region including a specialist cardiothoracics unit where she gained a keen interest in teaching. She worked in education for a number of years before returning to full time clinical practice in 2001, working in multi-professional education and governance roles. She worked as clinical lead with Sheffield Hallam Universities on the Combined Inter-professional Learning Unit and was operational lead for the pilot of first Patient Public Involvement strategies. Her current portfolio is wide and varied and includes patient experience; she has a particular interest in the experience of patients with mental health issues in acute services.

Juliet Walters, Chief Operating Officer Juliet Walters (2).jpg

Juliet was appointed Chief Operating Officer in February 2015 and is responsible for leading the effective daily management and operation of the Trust. Juliet has extensive operational experience having held Director posts in six hospital Trusts ranging from leading teaching/research hospitals to hospitals with significant challenges. Juliet has a strong track record of transformational change, service and performance delivery, which is underpinned by her passion and skills for organisation and people development.

As the executive lead for operations Juliet also leads on the strategic development of Clinical Directorates.

Juliet began her career in the university sector and was an Academic Registrar prior to joining the NHS in 2003 as part of the first cohort of the national Gateway to Leadership programme.



Philip Ashton, Senior Independent Director

philipashton.jpgBorn in Yorkshire and a graduate of Oxford University, Philip worked primarily in London before returning to the York area in 2003. During his years at Pricewaterhouse Coopers he specialised in technical aspects of the audit practice, developing audit techniques and technology, particularly internal control and risk management. Philip was also involved in training and development, an area which continues to be of great interest to him.

He was a founder member of the Auditing Practices Board, and more recently was a representative of the auditing profession on the International Auditing and Assurance Standards Board.

Currently he is also a Governor on the Board of the Archbishop Sentamu Academy in Hull, and is member of the York Minster Finance Committee.

Philip is Chair of the Audit Committee and a member of the Remuneration Committee.

Professor Dianne Willcocks, Vice Chair

diannewillcocks.jpgProfessor Dianne Willcocks was appointed as a Non-Executive Director in 2010. Her appointment followed 11 years as Chancellor of York St John University. Prior to that she had appointments with Sheffield Hallam University and the University of North London.

Dianne brings 30 years' experience of change management and modernisation in higher education, and is a passionate advocate for socially inclusive public services. Her research background is in social gerontology.

Michael Sweet, Non-Executive Director

michaelsweet.jpgThe greater part of Mike's career has been in the commercial sector. In Unilever's Personal Products Division he held senior positions in planning and logistics where he describes himself as a "commissioner" of services. He became a "provider" following the acquisition of his business unit by an international logistics company. This resulted in board level experience in operational management, customer relations and business development and culminated in his appointment as the chairman responsible for the integration and co-ordination of a five country Central European logistics business.

Latterly Mike has concentrated his energies on logistics consultancy, the investigation of complaints involving children for a number of Social Service departments in Yorkshire, and for the past five years he has been a Non-Executive Director of the Selby & York PCT and more recently the North Yorkshire & York PCT.

Libby Raper, Non-Executive Director


Libby joined the Board in 2009, bringing over 25 years experience as Chief Executive and Chair within the public, private and charitable sectors. At this Trust she Chairs the Quality and Safety Committee, and serves on the Audit, Charity, Arts Committees and the Workforce Strategy Committee. She is a Director of Yellowmead, a boutique management consultancy, Vice Chair of Leeds City College and is actively involved with a number of Arts and Cultural organisations in York and across the country.

Michael Keaney, Non-Executive Director

michaelkeaney.jpgMike was appointed as a Non-Executive Director in September 2012. A Business Director with over 40 years' experience in the private sector mainly in manufacturing. He has held senior management positions including CEO, Managing Director and Board Member with companies operating in Europe and North America. Mike is an experienced Director with a successful record in business improvement and transformation both in the volume and specialist vehicle sectors. He has delivered profitable transformation programmes through business restructuring, and more recently Management Buy Out and Venture Capital backed initiatives. Mike likes to focus on business planning and strategy.

Jennie Adams, Non-Executive Director

jennieadams.jpgJennie joined the Board as a Non-Executive Director in September 2012. She has lived in Scarborough for 14 years and is married to a local doctor with three school-aged children. Since graduating from Southampton University in 1984 with a 1st. in Economics Jennie has had a career in investment analysis and fund management, working for the likes of Aviva and Abbey Life. After starting a family she moved to Yorkshire and has taken on a number of roles including Governor and volunteer positions at local schools and a short spell as a NED at Scarborough Hospital. She is currently a director of Finance Yorkshire, a £90m fund investing in small businesses in the Yorkshire and Humber region.

Jenny McAleese, Non-Executive Director

Jenny McAleese Photograph (smaller2).jpgAfter graduating from Jesus College, Oxford in French and German, Jenny joined Grant Thornton and qualified as a chartered accountant. She remained with the firm for ten years, becoming an Audit Manager and then a Senior Healthcare Financial Consultant advising NHS trusts. For eighteen months she was seconded to the NHS Management Executive as a Business Analyst.

In 1996 Jenny joined The Retreat psychiatric hospital in York as Director of Finance and a year later became Chief Executive, a post she held until her retirement in October 2016.

Jenny has extensive non-executive experience. She has been a lay member of Council of the University of York since 2007 and is a Pro-Chancellor and sits on the Board of Hull York Medical School. She also sits on the Audit Committee at Joseph Rowntree Foundation.
