Ward support volunteer

Role description

Many of our wards need support in the afternoons and evenings, answering the phones, ringing relatives back to give appropriate messages, helping patients stay in touch using their own phones or the tablets on the ward.  Volunteers would also carry out ‘runner’ type tasks fetching belongings from main reception, and also supporting with drinks rounds.

Key information:

  • A face covering will be provided for you once you are in the entrances, put please do bring your own face covering when walking around the hospital sites
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be provided for you during your volunteering shift
  • All volunteers are required to go through an Occupational Health screening and COVID Risk assessment prior to starting

List of example tasks:

  • Answer phone calls on any of the ward phones and take messages
  • Ask patients if they would like to use the iPad to video call patients families, and facilitate this
  • Assisting with tea rounds
  • Transferring bags
  • Sitting and/or speaking with patients who may be lonely and just want a chat
  • Checking water jugs
  • Seeing if patients need drinks (in between tea rounds)

We will support you by:

  1. Providing and delivering a mandatory training program
  2. Providing access to other training as appropriate
  3. Linking you with a volunteer supervisor who will be your main point of contact, as well as the Volunteer Services team.
  4. Listening to your feedback about your role
  5. Reimbursing reasonable travel expenses incurred as a result of volunteering (see Volunteering Expenses policy)
