“I am a Domestic on Chestnut Ward at Scarborough Hospital, where I have worked for just over a year.

“I previously worked at Specsavers for a long time, as well as in retail, but I have always been attracted to working here as I love the hospital environment.  I like how busy it is and the constant ‘buzz’ - as well as the fact that every day is so different.

“People think that being a domestic is solely about cleaning and keeping the ward shipshape.  Of course it is - but we do so much more too.  Working closely with my co-worker Nikki, we do many other tasks such as preparing breakfast for patients, refreshing water jugs, making refreshments, as well as serving lunch.  The cleaning aspect of our role is really important and we do work hard to ensure the bays, wards, nurses’ station and toilets are cleaned frequently and meticulously.

“My favourite part of the job is meeting the patients.  I enjoy getting to know them and having a little chat with them while I work.  Some people don't get many visitors so my interaction can make all the difference to them.  Most patients stay for around a week and in that time you get to learn their name and all about them - as they do you. The small things, like how they like their cup of tea for instance, can make their stay with us a better one.

“I enjoy being part of the team that makes up Chestnut Ward.  The healthcare assistants and nurses are lovely and it is a great atmosphere to work in.  The NHS is such a great thing and we are very lucky as a nation to have it.”
