Chip in to help your hospital

Fish and chip shops in Scarborough and Filey are being invited to support their local hospital by inviting customers to text a £1 donation while they are queuing for their chips.

York Teaching Hospital Charity, who raise funds to improve patient care and wellbeing at Scarborough Hospital, are asking businesses to display a poster so that customers can donate to raise extra funds that have been lost through the lack of collecting tins and using cash. 

Since the pandemic many businesses have been closed or have removed their collection tins to help stop the spread of the virus, and people are being encouraged to pay electronically.

When Chris Ingham from Inghams Restaurant and Takeaway in Filey saw the scheme, he was the first to get in touch.

Chris said: “If simply displaying a poster can support our local hospital which has always been there for us, then it’s an easy decision.”

Maya Liversidge, Community Fundraiser for York Teaching Hospital Charity, said: “We are always grateful to all the local businesses who support us by having a collection tin and to the generous public who are happy to give us their loose change. However, so much has changed over the last year and we are hoping our busy fish and chip shops can help by displaying a poster that lets their customers know how they can donate with a simple text.

“So next time you pop out for fish and chips keep an eye out for our poster and text CHIPIN to 70085 to donate £1!”
