Hospital staff brighten the wards with Christmas doors

A new tradition is sweeping the Childrens ward at Scarborough Hospital as part of the Christmas festivities.

Last year staff in the family health department decided they could do more to brighten up the children’s wards across the Trust so decided to decorate the doors for Christmas. The festive gesture has since grown into a serious business as teams vie to create the most attractive decorated Christmas door. It has now turned into a competition where each creation is judged to find the overall winner.

Sharon Miles, service manager for children’s services, said: “Last year we decided to have a bit of fun on the run up to Christmas and decorate some of the doors on the children’s ward to brighten it up. Everyone on the children’s ward, from consultants to the nursing team, got involved to work in teams on their own door in their own time.

“It gets very competitive so it means we get some brilliant Christmas decorations! We don’t do things by half on the children’s ward and people have taken their decorating seriously, coming up with themes and using a whole variety of materials to create a unique design.

“This year the teams have upped their game and the results have been outstanding. For example, the medical secretaries even roped in friends and family to help create their sensory door.

“Best of all - it gets everyone in the Christmas spirit, it boosts morale and the children love it!”

The winning door told the story of ‘The Night before Christmas’ and included a specially written poem by neonatal support worker Vicky Lamb.

Jamie Todd, care group manager for family health, added: “Congratulations to the Special Care Baby Unit for all the work they put into their door which was voted the winner. The standard is getting higher and higher and we’re already looking forward to seeing how far people will go for next year’s competition!”
