New look for Selby clinic thanks to Friends

Selby children's area

A children’s clinic room at Selby War Memorial Hospital has been given an eye-catching underwater makeover to help children feel more relaxed.

Thanks to a donation from the Friends of Selby Hospital, healthcare assistants Sharon Young and Rebecca Smart have created a child friendly environment for the child weighing room.

Rebecca explained: “Previously, the clinical look of the room could be quite daunting for some children when they come to be weighed and measured in height, particularly those who have been diagnosed with autism. Dealing with children and ensuring they stand tall and still can be quite a challenge so we thought it would be a good idea to change the look to divert the children’s attention.”

The clinic has been transformed into an underwater submarine where, instead of looking at a bare wall, the children can focus on the pretty fish.

Sharon added: “We are so grateful to the Friends of Selby Hospital for their kind donation. The transformation has been a great success and made the clinic a lot easier for both staff and the children.”
