Launching the New Perioperative Medicine Website

Perioperative Medicine is a model of care first developed by the Royal College of Anaesthetists. It aims to provide an integrated approach to the care the team provides to patients before, during and after surgery.

Following a grant from the Health Foundation, the team formally introduced a Perioperative Medicine Service at York Hospital in October 2015.

The service is currently run by ten Consultant Anaesthetists and two Perioperative Medicine Nurse Specialists. They work alongside the surgical and ward team and are involved mainly in the preoperative assessment and preparation and immediate post-operative care of patients.

Currently the teams focus is on patients undergoing major elective colorectal surgery but we hope to expand into other surgical fields in 2018.

The team has been working hard on developing a Perioperative Medicine website so that patients and their loved ones can access information on the surgical journey at York Teaching Hospital. This also includes advice on health before surgery and what to expect in the post-operative period.

The new website can be viewed at the following link: www.yorkperioperativemedicine.nhs.uk.

Any feedback on the site is warmly welcomed and can be sent to periop@york.nhs.uk or you can speak to a member of the team by calling 01904 721758.
