Non-Executive Director and Associate Non-Executive Director vacancies

York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provides a comprehensive range of acute hospital and specialist healthcare services for approximately 800,000 people living in and around York, North Yorkshire, North East Yorkshire and Ryedale, an area covering 3,400 square miles. Our annual turnover is approaching £500m and our workforce of around 9,000 staff deliver care in community settings as well as across our eight hospital sites.

We are proud to be a partner with the Hull York Medical School in providing clinical placements and training for future doctors at Scarborough and York Hospitals. We are part of the Humber, Coast and Vale Integrated Care System (ICS) where we work with non-NHS organisations to provide better outcomes for people in our communities; locally and regionally.

We are now to looking to appoint two new people to our Board: a substantive Non-Executive Director (NED) and an Associate Non-Executive Director (ANED) both of whom will provide support, oversight, governance and leadership in the pursuit of our strategy.

Non-Executive Director (circa 5 days a month)

For the NED post, we are looking for a qualified accountant to become a member of our Audit Committee. You will be joining a strong and high-performing Board comprised of individuals with a wide range of professional backgrounds and lived experience. Utilising your experience from your chosen profession, whether private, public or voluntary sector, you will bring support, challenge and independent judgement to a complex, fast-paced, regulated environment.

The successful candidate will have proven senior leadership skills, be operating at Board level, and have a strong commitment to the values of the NHS. Previous Non-Executive Director experience would be advantageous but is not essential - rather, the ability to challenge constructively through solid knowledge and understanding is a critical component of the role.

Associate Non-Executive Director (circa 2 days a month)

We are also seeking to fill a new role of Associate Non-Executive Director, which offers the opportunity to develop non-executive skills in preparation for becoming a full NED. We are seeking an individual who is financially literate but there is no requirement to be operating at Board level for this post.

You will need insight and senior leadership experience to assimilate complex information and use this to influence and shape our services so that we can better meet challenges and resolve issues.

We are committed to, and actively promote, equality of opportunity for all staff, and we want our Board of Directors to reflect the diversity of the population we serve. We welcome all applications, especially from under-represented groups including people from minority ethnic communities and those whose lived experience provides our board with a fresh perspective.  Applications are particularly encouraged from those who:

  • Are from a minority ethnic background
  • Have experience of gender and women’s issues
  • Are a younger person
  • Are open about their faith,
  • Have an understanding of or have experienced social deprivation and used this to influence positively
  • Live with a disability
  • Are openly LGBTQ+

Both roles offer the opportunity to support and to challenge constructively at a senior level, to help our executive team to think and deliver differently, and to help us stretch our resources for maximum reach on behalf of local communities and citizens.

Your values really matter to us too; if you support and value public service, share our values and behaviours, believe you can champion the standards of public life and can show you have influenced beyond the sphere of your role, we would value a conversation.
