Public urged to name their local health hero

Have you received outstanding service from a local healthcare professional in the past 12 months?  Do you know a healthcare hero who has gone above and beyond the call of duty for a loved one? Now is your chance to recognise and celebrate their efforts.

York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is appealing to the public to nominate a staff member or team from their local hospitals or community services, who they feel deserve special recognition at its annual staff award ceremony.

Nominations for the Trust’s Celebration of Achievement Awards are open until Friday 28 June 2019, with patients and families invited to nominate an individual or team for the ‘Patients’ Choice’ award so they can say thank you for any outstanding care they have received.

The award will be presented to an individual or team who has shown an exceptionally caring, supportive and compassionate service to patients, their families and their friends.

Mike Proctor, Chief Executive of the Trust, said:  “Every day in the NHS, dedicated teams and individuals go to extraordinary lengths to provide exceptional care and fantastic services.  Our Celebration of Achievement Awards have become a valuable and highly regarded way of honouring colleagues who have excelled in their achievements and service for the Trust.

“It is as important as ever to share, celebrate and recognise the excellent work of the NHS, and it is always an honour and a great source of pride to listen to stories of outstanding care from patients.

“Every year we have hosted the awards, we have been blessed to be filled with truly inspirational stories and I look forward to witnessing staff throughout the Trust receive deserved praise and recognition for making a difference.”

Last year’s winner, as nominated by the public, was Simon Harrison, Staff Nurse from ward 24 at York Hospital.  Simon was nominated for supporting a patient with down syndrome who was terrified of having her bloods taken, which was vital to her care.  Simon’s efforts, time and intervention ensured that the patient overcame her fear, enabling her to receive the care and treatment needed.

Nominations can be made online at www.yorkhospitals.nhs.uk/the-patients-choice-award1/

The top three shortlisted nominations and nominators will be invited to attend the presentation ceremony on Thursday 17 October at Scarborough Spa.  Successful nominators will also be invited to contribute to a small film about their nominee.
