Top accolade for Scarborough and Bridlington endoscopy

People coming to Scarborough and Bridlington hospitals for endoscopy procedures are receiving the highest standard of care according to the Royal College of Physicians.

To achieve the country’s top accreditation the endoscopy units were subjected to rigorous scrutiny by a team from the Royal College of Physicians on the quality of clinical services, patient experience, workforce and training. 

Dr Othman Saraj, clinical lead for endoscopy, said: “The Royal College of Physicians award this accreditation from the Joint Advisory Group (JAG) for high-quality gastrointestinal endoscopy services. They set the standards for competence in endoscopy and quality to ensure that endoscopy units have the skills, resources and motivation necessary to provide the highest quality, timely, patient-centred care.

“This accreditation provides independent and impartial recognition that a service demonstrates high levels of quality. I’m extremely proud of the whole team on reaching this standard.”

Accredited units have to submit evidence annually to demonstrate that they are continuing to meet standards and have a five yearly on site assessment carried out by a team from the Royal College of Physicians.

Sue Thomson, sister for the endoscopy unit, said: “We are delighted to have attained this accreditation. It reflects the high standards of service provided to patients and the hard work of our team. Our patients can be assured that the highest standards of quality and safety are met, and the unit can offer a first class service consistently.”

As part of the improvements made during the accreditation the team have installed an information screen for the patient waiting area.  Patients can now see waiting times at a glance, plus other relevant patient information.

Liz Hill, care group manager, added: “Congratulations to the whole endoscopy team, who have worked so hard to achieve this. It’s an enormous milestone for the unit and provides efficient and patient-centred care for all.”
