York Hospital

Nominated for a star award when a burst water main on Wigginton Road outside York Hospital caused mayhem, traffic came to a standstill in and out of York Hospital.

This was particularly evident at rush hour when staff, visitors and patients were leaving the hospital site. The York car parking and security team sprang into action, approaching every car coming in for appointments to give advice on where to park, how to collect patients from wards, attend appointments and get to ED with as little delay as possible.

They contacted the council control room and asked them to change the traffic light sequencing to stop incoming cars who had ignored the road closed signs. The team stayed on until after 8pm to help the night shift manage the situation even though they had started at 6am.
