Events to celebrate breastfeeding awareness week

Today, Monday 19 May, marks the start of Breastfeeding Awareness Week, a national awareness week which aims to promote the benefits of breastfeeding.

In order to promote the benefits of breastfeeding, Midwives, Health Visitors and Peer Supporters will be holding events across North Yorkshire

York

During the week, Health Visitors and Children Centre Workers will be manning an information stand at Mothercare at Clifton Moor in York to offer advice and support to mothers about breastfeeding.

They will also be promoting their Nurture support groups which provide support to mums in areas where there was previously no access to support and low breastfeeding rates.

Scarborough

Breast Friends a Scarborough-based voluntary peer support group, which aims to support breastfeeding women, will be marking the week with a fundraising event – a family fun picnic held in Scarborough’s beautiful Crescent Gardens. The picnic and fundraising event will be held at the Crescent Gardens, between 11am and 1.30pm.

Whitby

A team of Whitby peer supporters will be marking the week with a fundraising event – a family fun picnic held in Whitby’s Community Gardens on Friday 23 May from 12 noon. Anyone is invited to come and join in the fun. Trained peer supporters will be on hand for any further information or enquiries on antenatal classes, breastfeeding support and play groups.

Further information about breastfeeding can be sought from your midwife, health visitor and voluntary support groups.
