Organ donors to be remembered with new artwork installation
Two new artwork installations are to be unveiled at York and Scarborough Hospitals to recognise the precious gift given by organ donors.
Metal artist Salina Somalya has been commissioned to work on the pieces, ‘On the wings of hope’, which represents the fragile nature of the transplant process.
Salina researched the transplant process talking to recipients of donated organs, clinicians and those who have donated organs to others. Through this she came up with the idea of wings conveyed through the delicate form of feathers. These are made of aluminium and each one has been hand coloured using dyes and inks.
The works will be installed at the end of August and a ceremony is planned on Friday 4 September for a formal unveiling prior to National Transplant Week.
The sculptures will be unveiled by Trust Chair Sue Symington. Staff involved in donation, donor families and transplant recipients are all invited.
Any member of the public who has been involved in organ donation or transplantation in any way is welcome to attend. The information desk in the main entrance will be able to direct people.
