Proud NHS staff celebrate long service

36 MEMBERS of staff from York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, who, between them, have clocked up over 1,000 years of service, have been honoured at a Long Service ceremony.

The annual event took place on Thursday 6 July at the Crown Spa Hotel, Scarborough, where deputy chief executive, Mike Proctor, paid tribute to the dedicated and caring staff from across the Trust - many of whom have spent much of their working lives in the National Health Service.

Individuals honoured at the event were those who have reached their 25 and 40 year service milestones.  On the night, the longest serving employees were Christine Heaton and Stephen Trafford.

Christine, who up to her retirement in 2016 had served 46 years - all at Scarborough - starting as a nurse aide in September 1971.  Stephen has also served 46 years for the NHS, and was joined on the night by wife Andrea, also celebrating her 25 year long service award. 

Speaking about the awards Mike said: “These awards recognise outstanding commitment to duty and I would like to congratulate and thank each recipient for their valuable years of service.

“These awards offer us a great opportunity to recognise the tremendous achievements of staff from all areas of the organisation including those working in our clinical, non-clinical and in the community.

“Our staff are without doubt our greatest asset and work extremely hard to provide the very best possible care to our patients.  Each and every one of them is a credit to our service and the public they serve.”

A similar event was held in York in June, were a further 84 staff from the York area celebrated clocking up 2,300 years between them.
