Scarborough event for World Diabetes Day
People are invited to find out more about diabetes and how healthy eating and exercise can help prevent the disease at a special event being held in Scarborough to highlight World Diabetes Day.
The free event will take place on 14 November in the Ocean Room at the Spa Complex, South Bay and will include a programme of speakers, information stands and exercise and live cooking demonstrations.
Helen Hinchliffe, Diabetes Services Co-ordinator from York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust who has organised the event, said: “With diabetes on the increase we wanted to give people in Scarborough and North Yorkshire the opportunity to learn more about the prevention of diabetes and other long term conditions. The event is particularly of interest to anyone with diabetes, their families and carers but we really hope to increase people’s awareness and knowledge of diabetes and show them how to live a healthy life with this condition.”
Speakers include the President of Diabetes UK ,Richard Lane and Patrick Crowley the chief executive of York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Other speakers will be sharing their experience of diabetes and the physical and emotional challenges they have faced.
Helen added: “We have some really inspiring speakers who have run marathons and competed in triathlons despite having diabetes so they will hopefully motivate others to do the same. Local company Let’s Bike will be speaking about their passion and experience of cycling and why it is now such a popular way of keeping fit.”
With a focus on encouraging people to eat healthier and increase their exercise there will also be a whole range of advice from local fitness centres and slimming clubs. The free event, “Increase your awareness of diabetes”, starts at 9.30am and finishes at 2.30pm and everyone is welcome.
Notes to editors:
World Diabetes Day is the primary global awareness campaign of the diabetes world and is held on the 14 November of each year. It was introduced in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organisation in response to the alarming rise of diabetes around the world.
World Diabetes Day is a campaign that features a new theme chosen by the International Diabetes Federation each year to address issues facing the global diabetes community. While the campaign lasts the whole year, the day itself marks the birthday of Frederick Banting who, along with Charles Best, first conceived the idea which led to the discovery of insulin in 1922.
The World Diabetes Day 2013 campaign marks the fifth and final year of the 2009-2013 campaign on “Diabetes education and prevention.”
