Our hospitals

A new healthcare approach for Scarborough

Along with our partners, we are committed to sustaining urgent and emergency care services in Scarborough, twenty four hours a day, seven days a week.

A review of our acute East Coast services has told us that in order to meet the current challenges we face - recruitment, geography, demand and demography of the East Coast - that our existing model of service needs to change and develop, together with our healthcare partners.

To help us do this, we are delighted that Scarborough Hospital is planning to invest a total of £47 million pound funding to build a new Urgent and Emergency Care facility and supporting site-wide engineering infrastructure which will enable us to offer high quality modern facilities, close to home, designed to create and maximise the best environment in which to care for our patients.

We are at the start of a long and ambitious journey, and we need our workforce, patients, partners and local communities to support us along the way. You can read more about our exciting plans on the following pages.

Healthcare innovation

Our vision is to create the right environment, to provide quality care and outcomes for patients, delivered by an ambitious, skilled workforce.

Our new facility will be a genuine healthcare innovation for the people of Scarborough and surrounding areas and will completely transform the environment for our patients and staff.

One of the most exciting aspects of the new facility is the opportunity it gives us to build in better ways of providing healthcare that are flexible in design and will adapt to patients’ needs in the future. By increasing our clinical space, our new building will facilitate the introduction of a new model of care for urgent and emergency care patients on the ground floor. This will also reduce the time that people have to wait in the department and improve patient safety. A new 26 bed critical care and high dependency medical unit will be created on the floor above.

Future technologies will be part of the fabric of the building, from the fixtures and fittings to the most advanced technology for diagnosis and treatment, including new x/ray, ultrasound and CT rooms.

There’s a wealth of evidence to show that our surroundings have an effect on the way we feel. The interior design of the new hospital building will have a nature theme, using colour, space and natural lighting to improve and enhance the patient experience.

Next steps

The new hospital is scheduled to open early 2024 but before we can start building on our hospital site, we need to go through several cycles of detailed planning, working closely with the Department of Health and Social Care, health partners and our staff, patients, communities and local stakeholders.

This process will ensure our estate is able to support the delivery of high quality care for our local populations both now and in the future, and that it meets the needs of our clinical teams, healthcare professionals and workforce.

Our final business case approval is due Spring 2022, after which we can progress our plans to build a new vision of healthcare on the East Coast.
