The Acute Medical Unit (AMU) receives acutely ill medical patients from General Practitioners or the Emergency Department. The function of the AMU is to allow acute medical assessment in a single area where specialist medical, nursing and equipment resources are concentrated. The unit at York Hospital consists of 60 acute beds across AMU and AMB wards, and at Scarborough Hospital there are 28 acute beds in Cherry ward.
Patients who are deemed suitable for ambulatory care are directly referred to the Ambulatory Care Unit (AMC) at York Hospital, the Dales Unit at Scarborough General Hospital, or the Lawrence Unit at Bridlington Hospital. Ambulatory care is the medical care given to patients in hospital on the same day they present to hospital without needing to be admitted overnight. The Trust ambulatory care services allow a rapid assessment of medical patients with early diagnostic tests, allowing diagnosis and treatment without the need for hospital admission.
