Cancer Care Centre
The Cancer Care Centre opened in 1998 with funds raised from an appeal by York Against Cancer and the York Press.
The centre provides information, support, complementary therapies and guidance for patients with cancer and their families.
The centre is located within The York Hospital and be accessed at Junction 5 from inside the hospital. The main entrance to the centre is opposite the new multistorey car park and is in between the Children's Centre and Magnolia Centre.
Claire and Michelle are the cancer care administrators and they will be there to welcome you to the centre and help in any way they can.

What does The Cancer Care Centre at York Hospital offer?
We offer a wide range of up-to-date information resources covering most aspects of dealing with a diagnosis and living with and beyond cancer. Drop in to browse the information room or call us if there is something you would like us to send you or your family.
Our qualified, experienced therapists offer aromatherapy, massage, reflexology, Indian head massage and reiki sessions for patients. To find out more call us or contact your Clinical Specialist Nurse or Consultant for a referral.
The Cancer Psychology Service
The cancer psychology team offer psychological and emotional support for patients and families. Ask for further information or talk to a member of your healthcare team for a referral to the psychology team.
Benefits Advice and Welfare Support
An experienced benefits advisor from the City of York Council joins us for two weekly sessions to allow you to discuss your individual welfare support needs. Call us or drop in to make an appointment. Sessions are held on Tuesday's and Thursday's, in the afternoon.
Hair Loss Support
The centre provides hair-loss support for patients undergoing treatment for cancer. We offer an extensive range of hats and scarves to suit most tastes. Centre staff are happy to help you choose a style that is easy and comfortable to wear in a style and colour that suits you. No appointment is necessary to choose headwear.
We are able to offer head shaving, wig fitting and wig trimming*, but you must make an appointment for that. Call us to book an appointment for wig services.
*this is for patients currently undergoing cancer treatments. Please note, we do not provide wigs.
Local Support Groups
The centre is host to a number of local support groups. They may help you and your family cope with an initial cancer diagnosis and treatment. They may also be a source of support throughout your personal journey. Contact us for details of forthcoming meetings. We also hold details of national support groups, self-help groups and helplines.
‘Look Good….Feel Better’ Pamper Therapy
Attending a ‘Look Good…Feel Better’ session can help female cancer patients in a practical and positive way. We host the skincare and make-up workshops to help combat the visible side-effects of cancer treatment which, in turn, may boost your confidence. To book a place call or drop-in to the centre. Take your mind off everything by immersing yourself for a little while in some creativity with our resident artist. There's something for everyone and creativity really does help you to switch off. You may discover a hidden talent or just enjoy a little time doing something completely different. Sessions are held on Tuesday afternoons.
Living well with cancer DVD
York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has produced a series of short films to support those living with, and beyond, a cancer diagnosis.
The films cover fear of recurrence, coping with worry, fatigue, diet, relationship concerns and how to pick the right level of physical activity and plan for the future.
