Oral and maxillofacial surgery
The department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery provides elective and emergency services for the population of North Yorkshire. York is the base where all services are provided. Consultants and junior staff provide out-patient, day surgery care and initial acute management at Bridlington, Harrogate and Scarborough.
Oral and maxillofacial surgery is the surgical speciality concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the mouth, jaws, face and neck. While a medical speciality, oral and maxillofacial surgery requires a dual qualification in medicine and dentistry.
The department manages patients with all oral and maxillofacial conditions with the exception of cleft lip and palate. This includes head and neck cancer, facial skin cancer, facial deformity, salivary gland diseases, facial trauma, dento-alveolar conditions (impacted teeth, cysts, oro-facial infections and tumours of the jaws), temporo-mandibular joint disorders and oral medical conditions.
Operations are carried out at:
- York Hospital
- Harrogate Hospital
- Scarborough Hospital
- Selby Hospital
- Bridlington Hospital (day case)
Emergency admissions are to York Hospital. Scarborough Hospital also provides specialist cover for Maxillofacial emergencies, Monday to Friday between 9-5. Outside these hours and during weekends and holidays, emergency specialist cover is provided by York Hospital.

The Consultants and secretaries offices and the outpatient clinics are located in the Head and Neck Unit, at the north end of the hospital, above Ellerby's restaurant.
Our adult patients are on Ward 28 and on the Extended Stay Day Surgery Ward. Our paediatric patients are on Ward 17.
