York Hospital’s Wellbeing Choir will continue for a third phase following its overwhelming success since beginning in January 2019.  Keep reading for everything you need to know about how to get involved, or contact Jess to find out more.

What is a Wellbeing Choir?

A Wellbeing Choir is like a regular choir, only the main focus is our health and wellbeing.  Studies show that choral singing improves our mood, with a decrease in stress, depression and anxiety; effects often attributed to the deeper breathing associated with singing. These benefits are enhanced in a group setting, compared to singing alone.  Through the Wellbeing Choir we aim to provide opportunities for people to socialise, and most importantly, to feel good and have fun!

Who leads the choir?

Nicola Betts leads this fully inclusive choir in friendly and relaxed sessions suitable for all abilities.  Nicola has a wealth of experience as a community musician, music teacher and singer.   Her work includes leading community choirs and Tiny Toes Music sessions which aim to nurture creativity, self-expression and self confidence in babies, toddlers pre-schoolers and their grown-ups.  To find out more click here.

Who can attend the Choir?

Everyone – Whether you’re staff, a patient, visitor or member of the general public, we’d love to welcome you along.

When and Where?

The York Hospital Wellbeing Choir runs between 12.30pm – 1.30pm, every Wednesday between 4 September 2019 - 18 March 2020.  It takes place in York Hospital’s Chapel which can be found on the main corridor near junction 5.  The Chaplaincy Department will be providing alternate facilities for quiet prayer and reflection during choir sessions.

What if I don’t have a full hour available?

The choir is very informal; you’re most welcome to pop-in when you can and stay for as little or as long as you like.

Do I have to pay?

There’s no commitment required when joining the choir, however, we do ask for a suggested donation of £2 which will go to York Teaching Hospital Charity who help to fund Arts projects, including the choir.

Looking to the Future

The Wellbeing Choir has been set up by the Arts Team as part of their music programme. We will continue to evaluate the choir to ensure we’re providing the best service for participants and to inform the structure of the choir following completion of phase three.  If you’d like to share any feedback please contact Jess by clicking here.

Thank you!

We’d love to say a huge thank you to our funders, York Teaching Hospital Charity, for their support of all things creative.  Along with a special thank you to York Hospital’s Chaplaincy Department for allowing us to use their facilities.

And of course, thank you to everyone who comes along to sing with us!
