Volunteering Opportunities

Volunteers fulfil a variety of roles with the purpose of enhancing patient experience.  Although volunteers do not perform any clinical roles, they are able to get some hands on experience of what it is like to work in a hospital environment and to work alongside hospital staff.  Below is more information about the type of volunteering we offer.

Dining companion - Level 1

Volunteers are involved in providing basic assistance and company to patients at mealtimes. The volunteer will not be involved in feeding patients, but will undertake a programme of training to ensure that they have an awareness of the placement's boundaries, and of how to give encouragement and support to patients through their role.  Volunteers are required during meal times, both at lunchtime and in the evening.

Dementia Volunteers

Dementia Volunteers deliver activities for patients with dementia, based around a chosen area of interest. Activities could include but is not limited to; arts and crafts, music, drama, nails, games and reading. Volunteers are required to complete training for the role and are asked to complete an activity proposal form alongside their application. Flexible hours are available.

Volunteer visitors 

Volunteers who visit patients on the wards to cheer them up when they have no one else to visit. Flexible hours are available.

Clinic/department liaison

Volunteers facilitate patient visits to clinics.  This role involves explaining to patients how the clinic works and ensuring that the patient journey runs smoothly for them. There may be some physical work involved so volunteers need to be aware of the particular requirement of this role. A variety of times are available.

Catering Volunteers

Volunteers welcome and assist patients, visitors and staff using the restaurant facilities and supports staff to clear tables during busy restaurant times. Opportunities include weekdays 11am – 3pm.

Volunteers also help out with the chaplaincy centre, visiting patients on the wards who need spiritual comfort. There are also opportunities to escort patients to Sunday services. To volunteer for chaplaincy you need to have a religious faith.

York Teaching Hospital Charity

Volunteers are involved in helping York Teaching Hospital Charity raise funds to support all of the hospitals in York Teaching NHS Foundation Trust through activities such as bucket collections, coffee mornings and helping to raise awareness in the local community.

York Teaching Hospital Charity helps to fund the extras to improve healthcare facilities above and beyond the NHS making patients feel better.

York Wheels

York Wheels operate from York Hospital and are always looking for volunteers. They help patients to get into hospital who are not eligible for patient transport. They charge a nominal fee to patients to cover petrol costs. Volunteers for this service need to own and drive a car. Friends of York Hospitals

The Friends of York Hospitals is a registered charity, it aims to raise money for the hospital, buying equipment that cannot be funded centrally and to provide volunteers that help patients and support the staff.
