On your feet day 28 April
Did you know that the average UK worker sits 10 hours a day with almost 70% of sitting time taking place at work?
On the 28th April 2017, ‘On Your Feet Britain’ are encouraging people to sit less and move more. They state that there is growing scientific evidence highlighting multiple health risks (including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, certain cancers and mental health) caused by excessive and prolonged sitting. This is a particular issue for those who have desk related jobs.
You can take part on 28 April by reducing your sitting time to move more.

Here are some ways that you and your colleagues could meet this challenge.
- Stand up during phone calls
- Have walking meetings
- Take a walk in your break time
- Eat your lunch away from your desk
- Use the stairs instead of the lift
- Stand up and take a break from your computer every 30 minutes
- Use the ‘Just 10 minutes’ exercises

Free Mindfulness Meditation sessions
One hour taster sessions, ‘The Mindful Way to Reducing Stress’, have been organised as a part of our Healthy Workforce commitment to staff health and well-being. The York sessions begin on Friday 9 December.

Discounted Mindfulness sessions
For those who wish to go on to learn mindfulness, Staff Benefits and the Occupational Health and Wellbeing Service have secured a 20 percent discount on eight week mindfulness courses offered by the Northern Centre for Mindfulness and Compassion.
