Trust celebrate major milestone with successful Nervecentre EPR go-live

The Trust has successfully completed a major phase of its Electronic Patient Record (EPR) transformation, with the Nervecentre system now live across multiple hospital and community sites.

Over the past week, the Trust has implemented the new system across Bridlington Hospital, Scarborough Hospital and York Hospital, as well as a range of community settings including St Monica’s, Selby, White Cross Court, and Nelson’s Court, covering key clinical areas such as urgent and emergency care, inpatient wards, maternity, paediatrics, and neonatal services.

This represents one of the largest and most complex digital transformations ever undertaken by the organisation, delivered at the heart of some of its busiest and most pressured clinical environments.

Throughout the transition, staff have maintained a relentless focus on patient safety and clinical excellence, ensuring that services continued to operate effectively while new systems were introduced.

Teams have adapted quickly to new ways of working, supported by a strong and visible presence of digital champions, floorwalkers, clinical leaders, and operational colleagues across all sites.

This milestone reflects an extraordinary collective effort across the organisation. Thousands of staff, from frontline clinicians and ward teams to the digital team, have contributed to making the programme a success.

Across sites, there has been sustained and highly visible support through:

  • Digital champions embedded within clinical teams
  • Floorwalking teams providing extensive on-the-ground support
  • Command and control arrangements ensuring safe oversight
  • Strong clinical, operational and digital leadership

 This coordinated approach has enabled staff to build confidence rapidly, respond to challenges and maintain performance during one of the most significant change programmes in the Trust’s history.

James Hawkins, Chief Digital and Information Officer, York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said:

"This has been one of the most significant and complex transformations we have undertaken as a Trust, and I am incredibly proud of how our teams have delivered it.

“We have safely introduced a new Electronic Patient Record across multiple sites and some of our busiest clinical environments with zero downtime and without compromising the quality of care we provide to our patients. That is a remarkable achievement and a testament to the professionalism, resilience, and teamwork of colleagues right across our organisation.

“What has stood out most over the past week is the way people have come together – clinical, operational, and digital teams working side by side with Nervecentre, supporting each other, solving user queries quickly and keeping patients at the centre of everything we do.

 “It is also important to recognise the role that our in-house clinical digital and development team has had in delivering the depth of clinical functionality in Nervecentre. As the Trust moves forward with its new Nervecentre Electronic Patient Record, we must recognise the significant role played by ‘CPD’, our in-house EPR, which has supported staff and patients reliably over many years and will continue to do so until we fully migrate to Nervecentre.”

“This go-live marks the completion of Phase 1 of our Nervecentre EPR journey. We have two further phases ahead of us, and this first step gives us a strong and proven foundation for transformation.

“For our staff, it begins to simplify workflows, improve access to information and support more joined-up working across our services. For our patients, it enables safer, more coordinated and more responsive care.

“This is not the end of the journey - it is the beginning of a new chapter, and we now have the platform in place to continue to innovate and transform how we deliver care for years to come.”

Delivering an EPR go-live of this scale, particularly when transitioning from established incumbent systems to a new, unified platform, is a major undertaking. “That breadth is already evident in the level of adoption. In the first day after the York go-live, there were more than 3,200 logins, over 33,650 assessments completed and 188,000 notes recorded.

By adopting a cloud-based SaaS architecture, the Trust now has a modern digital foundation that supports innovation at pace and enables more seamless record sharing with other trusts across the region.

“We’re delighted that Nervecentre has been able to support the Trust on this journey, and we look forward to building on this strong foundation in the months and years ahead.”The Trust will now move into a period of optimisation, ensuring that the full benefits of the system are realised over time.

Two further phases of deployment remain, which will extend and deepen the use of Nervecentre across additional areas of the organisation.
