The National Independent Investigation of Maternity and Neonatal Services across England

27 June 2025

You may have heard the recent announcement by the Health Secretary, Wes Streeting, that there is to be a rapid inquiry into maternity and neonatal services.

The inquiry is likely to take place in two parts. The first will look at up to ten trusts where concerns have been raised. The second will take a system-wide look at maternity and neonatal care, drawing together lessons from past inquiries to form a national set of actions to improve care across the NHS.

We do not yet know the extent to which we will be required to participate in this work, if at all, but we will share further information as and when we learn more.

In the meantime, we continue to work in close partnership with our staff, our regulators, the people who use our maternity and neonatal services, and the Maternity and Neonatal Voices Partnership (MNVP) to ensure we are responding to feedback and continuously improving what we do.

If you have any questions or concerns about the review, please contact your local MNVP.
