Information for patients
North Yorkshire Diabetic Eye Screening Programme (NYDESP) has been offering eye screening to people with diabetes since 2008.
The programme looks after almost 50,000 people, covering a large geographical area, travelling out from bases in York, Scarborough, and Harrogate.
We aim to offer you a convenient, community based screening appointment, and our admin team will do our best to appoint you to your most suitable local venue. In some areas we offer Saturday or evening clinics, for those struggling to attend during the week.
Click the following links to find out more about the clinics we run, or what happens at your appointment. We also have an FAQ section.
Diabetic eye screening is a key part of diabetes care, as diabetic retinopathy is a major cause of sight loss in people of working age.
Eye screening reduces the risk of sight loss, by detecting sight threatening changes early, which is why attending your screening appointment is so important.
Often people with sight threatening retinopathy have no visual symptoms, and by the time the symptoms of retinopathy become noticeable, it can be much more difficult to treat.
Please contact us if you:
- have recently been diagnosed with diabetes and haven’t had an appointment
- think you are due your annual screening now but don’t have an appointment
- have any queries about your appointment or anything related to diabetic eye screening
