Covid-19 swabs analysed by PCR

The microbiology department is responsible for analysing all covid-19 PCR tests. The department currently runs an extended service between the hours 06:00 – 00:00 for this analysis. The laboratory aims to process all samples within 24hours.

For all information regarding taking swabs and for instructions for the testing for Covid-19 please access this information from the Covid-19 section of the staff intranet.

Please note: The department has a number of different platforms used in the diagnosis of CoVID-19 RNA. It is important to interpret the results in the right context, as those from asymptomatic or immunocompromised patients might be unreliable, and additional advice should be sought from the clinical team in these circumstances.

The Department is currently undergoing UKAS accreditation for this aspect of the service

Covid-19 antibody testing

The biochemistry department is responsible for analysing tests requiring Covid-19 antibody testing; this is a 24 hour service. The laboratory aims to process all samples within 24hours.

To view Clinical Biochemistry test information: Click here

Please note: Potential for false-negative results if the patient is tested pre-seroconversion (less than ~14 days post-infection, but data on this is scarce at present) or if the antibody levels diminish over time.
