Clinical IndicationAmylase is excreted by glomerular filtration and then 50% of it is reabsorbed by the tubules. This reabsorption is reduced in transient tubular damage, after burns, in the presence of DKA and acute pancreatitis as well as proteinuria resulting in an increase in amylase clearance. The measurement of amylase in urine is used as an indication of chronic hyperamylasemia, to exclude macroamylasemia and in the detection or exclusion of renal insufficiency and diabetic nephropathy. It is raised 7 – 10 days after an attack of pancreatitis.
