Sharon helped a patient with very limited funds attend an urgent eye clinic appointment to save his sight.

The man required an appointment to receive an important medication for his sight, and Sharon, a nurse within the eye clinic team, went above and beyond to make sure he could attend the appointment.

Sharon organised transport with Age UK and investigated how the man could be supported with the cost of returning home post-appointment.

“She was a very caring person and could recognise what a difference these small gestures could make to the rest of his life – he was very grateful. I wish there were a lot more people like Sharon around.”

Jo, a specialist midwife, was instrumental in our Trust's introduction of BadgerNet, an online maternity notes tool that improves patient safety and care.

Jo was the only digital midwife for most of the project, but she worked above and beyond to support colleagues during the transition. She wrote more than 100 user guides and organised drop-in sessions on wards and virtually.

“We are proud that our Trust was the first to go live in the region, with much appreciation to Jo for being such a great role model for digital engagement,” said nominator, James Hawkins.

Carol, a community midwife, has been caring for an extremely vulnerable patient with complex needs.

In the days after the patient’s baby had been born, Carol visited her every day to help the lady look after the baby and herself.

The patient struggled to trust new people, yet Carol went above and beyond for the lady and her partner, building a wonderful rapport. Well done, Carol.

When a man on a train to York became unwell, Douglas, also traveling on the train, immediately stepped in to help.

He was extremely calming, reassuring, and professional in his approach to helping the individual. An ambulance was arranged to meet the train at York Station, and, despite his early shift scheduled for the next morning, Douglas offered to go in the ambulance so the man wasn’t alone.

While off the clock, Douglas offered reassurance in a time of distress, which was noticed by other passengers on the train, as well as appreciated by the unwell individual.

A patient with dementia and complex needs was referred to the community therapy team. Due to the nature of their condition, the patient needed a lot of support.

After struggling with his mental and physical health, the patient had been unable to get out of bed for several weeks. Mairi and Megan joined forces to help the patient and improve his quality of life.

They sourced a wheelchair and worked with the patient until he was able to spend a few hours sitting in it, enabling him to spend time in different rooms, have a shower, a haircut, and go outside and feel the breeze on his face. It also meant he was able to enjoy some family time over Christmas.

Throughout their time helping this patient, Mairi and Megan have also provided emotional and practical support to his wife.

Their care has truly gone the extra mile, leaving no stone unturned in the pursuit to improve a patient’s quality of life. At all stages, they have embodied the Trust’s values and become a shining example of fantastic community care.

Georgia always goes the extra mile to help patients and colleagues but, recently, she exceeded herself.

As Georgia was leaving work, she met a patient on the stairs who was lost. The gentleman was very upset and Georgia kindly offered to help. Georgia found out that the patient had been told to come to Scarborough Hospital to be transported to York for an operation, but unfortunately there was no record of this.

After making numerous phone calls to secretaries, wards, and nursing staff, Georgia finally found out where the patient needed to be in York and even organised his transport.

Thank you for all your hard work in getting this man the care he needed, Georgia!
