A patient on the ward was desperate to see his wife, who was at home and coming towards the end of her life.
A safe discharge home for the man was looking unlikely, however, Sue organised an ambulance crew to take the patient home. The crew then connected with the patient’s care team, who worked together to get the patient into his home with suitable care.
While the patient reconnected with his wife, the ambulance crew waited outside so they could safely take him back to hospital. The couple were together for a couple of hours with their children, which gave them a chance to say a proper goodbye.
After a transfer to a bed in Malton, the couple were reunited once more. The man’s wife sadly died soon after this.
Sue, Claire, the ambulance crew, the patient’s care team, and many others involved in the patient’s care gave this man and his family the gift of a proper goodbye. It’s a heart-warming example of staff going above and beyond their duties.
