Our services

Critical Care Unit

The Critical Care Unit is a specialist hospital department that cares for people who are seriously ill or recovering from major surgery.

Our units at York Hospital and Scarborough Hospital provide level two (high dependency) and level three (intensive care) treatment, ensuring each patient receives the right level of care at the right time.

Our experienced team of doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals provides round-the-clock specialist care, close monitoring and advanced treatments to support patients during critical illness.

We are committed to delivering safe, high-quality care with compassion, working closely with patients and their families every step of the way.

Patient and family feedback

Your experience of your care matters to us, and we are constantly working to make the Critical Care Unit experience as supportive and stress-free as possible.

We value your feedback as part of this process, as it helps shape improvement. Please complete our Critical Care Unit patient and relative experience survey and share your thoughts.

ICNARC

Our Critical Care Unit participates in the ICNARC Case Mix Programme (CMP), a national audit that compares the quality of care provided by adult critical care units across the UK.

Our data clerks collect anonymised information about the care we provide and patient outcomes. This data is used to produce the ICNARC CMP Public Report, allowing us to compare our results with similar units across the country and identify opportunities to improve the care we provide.

Find out more on the ICNARC Case Mix Programme webpage or speak to a member of the team.

Critical Care Network

We are part of a larger network that helps us ensure high standards of care and access to centres with specialist resources. You can find out more about this on the North Yorkshire & Humberside Adult Critical Care Network website.

Your support can make a real difference to patients and their families.

Donations have helped us provide rehabilitation equipment, improve patient areas, and fund items that make a hospital stay more comfortable and personal.

There are several ways you can support our units, patients, and staff.

York & Scarborough Hospitals Charity

Donate through York & Scarborough Hospitals Charity website. You can make a one-off or regular donation and choose to support critical care at either York or Scarborough.

Amazon wishlists

Buy items from our regularly updated wish lists, including rehabilitation equipment, comfort items, and resources for patients and families.

Knitted hearts

These handmade hearts are given to families during bereavement and other difficult times, providing comfort and a lasting keepsake. One heart remains with the patient and the other goes home with their family as a keepsake that makes that distance feel just a little bit smaller.

They are kindly made and donated by members of the local community. If you would like to get involved, please look out for appeals on the Trust's social media channels or ask a member of the team.

Thank you for helping us provide the very best care for our patients and their loved ones.
