If you are experiencing urological symptoms or problems, please visit your GP. You may then be referred to the Urology Department.
Once your GP has referred you, you can schedule an outpatient appointment. Our team may arrange for you to have some tests before your appointment - this can help speed up the diagnostic process. We will write to you if you do need any of these tests.
You will then be seen at the One Stop Clinic (OSC) - also known as the Malton Diagnostic Centre - at Malton Community Hospital. This is an enhanced service for all urology patients that helps speed up diagnosis and treatment, with patients having a consultation, tests, and receiving treatment plans in one day.
The OSC is run by a team of highly-trained urology specialists led by our consultant urologists. Depending on your condition, you will be assigned to one of the specialists at the clinic and they will be your personal specialist throughout your visit.
If you have an appointment at the OSC, please arrive with a comfortably full bladder. You will be asked for a urine sample. Please come prepared to spend up to four hours in the clinic.
Your specialist will arrange any necessary tests. Although not every patient will need a test, possible tests include:
- blood test
- ultrasound scan
- X-ray
- flexible cystoscopy
- prostate examination and biopsy
- urinary flow rate evaluation
- urodynamics (bladder pressure study)
Your test results will be reviewed and discussed with you before you leave. If you had a bladder or prostate biopsy, these will take a few weeks to process.
After your clinic visit, you will either start treatment, be discharged back to your GP, have a further follow-up appointment with the urology team, be asked to come back for further tests, or be added to a waiting list for surgery.
Urgent referrals
You may be referred to urology urgently by your GP due to suspected cancer. If you are urgently referred, you will be offered a fast-track appointment.
It is very important that you are available to attend during the initial referral period and over the next two months if necessary. Please make sure that your GP has your most up-to-date contact details, including a mobile phone number and email address where possible.
