Emergencies

Emergency contraception

If you’re worried about an unplanned pregnancy after sex, emergency contraception can help prevent this. It's time sensitive, so you need to act quickly. There are two types – the oral pill (often referred to as ‘the morning after pill’) and the copper coil. Visit YorSexualHealth - Emergency Contraception for more information and guidance on how to access the most appropriate option for you.

You can also get emergency contraception from your GP, and the oral emergency contraceptive pill for free from pharmacies. Find a pharmacy - NHS

Unplanned pregnancy

A positive pregnancy test can come as a shock, and you may be undecided on how to proceed. Non-judgmental support and advice is available to you. Find out more information about your options by clicking here - YorSexualHealth - Unplanned Pregnancy

Emergency HIV treatment (PEP)

Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) is an anti-HIV medication that is prescribed to a HIV negative person within 72 hours of potential exposure to HIV. Ideally it should be started within 24 hours and it needs to be taken for 28 days. Find out more here - YorSexualHealth - PEP (for HIV exposure)

If you are unable to access PEP from YorSexual Health, you will need to go to your nearest A&E department, as it's important you start PEP as soon as possible.

Rape or sexual assault

If you have been raped, assaulted or abused, you are not alone and help is available. Acer House is a Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) in North Yorkshire, providing a dedicated service for men, women and children who have been raped or sexually assaulted recently or in the past. Find out more here - Home - Acer House - or call 0330 223 0099 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
