York Hospital Maternity Services

IMG_3429.jpg

Maternity services, including antenatal, delivery and postnatal care are delivered from York Hospital, Selby Hospital and in the Community.

The majority of the antenatal care is provided in the community setting by the woman's named midwife, particularly for low risk women.

Antenatal screening for Downs Syndrome, a dating scan and triple test, is offered to all women so the booking visit takes place as early as possible in the pregnancy.

Women can be booked for Consultant or Midwifery-Led Care throughout the childbirth experience.

Community Midwifery

Care is provided by teams of midwives, some of who come into the unit to maintain their professional skills. Opportunities are available for hospital-based midwives to undertake a rotational period to community if they so wish.

The first Children's Centre opened in July 2006 and the second In December 2007. There are currently eight planned for York across three geographical areas and two in the Selby area. The service is working towards having the community teams based within the three main Children's Centres in York where this is possible.

Antenatal Day Assessment Unit (ADAU)

The Antenatal Day Assessment Unit (ADAU) is open from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.

Antenatal Clinic (ANC)

The Antenatal Clinic (ANC) is situated on the York Hospital site and is open from 8.45am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. Antenatal ultrasound is part of this facility.

An antenatal clinic is held every Monday at Selby War Memorial Hospital. Antenatal scanning facilities are also available at Selby. Antenatal Screening service is provided from this area.

The Antenatal Clinic and Antenatal Day Unit are known collectively as Antenatal Day Services (ANDS). The Antenatal Day Services appointment line is 01904 725666. Danielle Marks is the Antenatal Day Service Co-ordinator.

A weekly antenatal clinic is held for pregnant women with diabetes that is supported by a Consultant Diabetologist working with the lead Consultant Obstetrician. There is also a two weekly high-risk antenatal clinic led by Consultant Obstetricians. There is a direct referral pathway between the midwives and the Obstetric Medical teams if required.

Antenatal classes

Antenatal classes produced by our own staff are now available on our website for you, your family and friends to share at any time during your pregnancy. We hope they will answer many of your questions about your pregnancy and birth at York Hospital. Please remember your community midwife or staff in the maternity unit are always available if you have any concerns and need to speak to someone. Click here to view our classes.
