Virtual Visiting

To minimise the spread of Covid-19 and protect our patients and colleagues, we ask for family, friends and carers to stay in touch with their loved ones ‘virtually’ wherever possible. Many patients will have their own mobiles and tablets with them, and we can help make sure they are switched on, charged up and connected to the Wi-Fi.

Families can also contact the ward directly to ask for updates and ask for help connecting with their loved one. We do ask that one person acts as the nominated point of contact for a patient. This is so that multiple people from the same family are not calling, and adding to the difficulty of other people getting through to the ward. We understand how difficult it is to be separated from your loved ones during this uncertain time, which is why we have introduced a 'Virtual Visiting' service. If your loved one is a patient without a phone or tablet of their own, we can help you to connect using Zoom on a hospital tablet.

If you would like to video call someone in hospital, provided this is the patients wish and the ward have deemed this appropriate, we can facilitate this. Please ring 01904 724229, email or speak to the ward directly, and a virtual video or phone call can be arranged for you. You will need to have the Zoom app for a video call. If you would like a normal phone call, most of our wards have a mobile phone that the patient can use, to free up the ward landline. We also offer this service to those who are based internationally as well.

We understand that not all of our patients and their loved ones will be able to access our virtual visiting service.  If you would like to send a message or a letter to a loved one who is an inpatient in one of our hospitals, please email it to Photos are also welcome.  These will be printed out and taken to your loved one, and read out loud to them if necessary.  At the beginning of your letter or message, please include the patient's full name, date of birth or address, and the hospital site and ward if known. The virtual visiting inbox and phone line are monitored Monday-Friday, 08:30am-16:30pm.

York Emergency Department (A&E)

The current entrance to the Emergency Department (A&E) is closed and a new entrance at the south of the building is in operation.

Arrive at Entrance 1, the main entrance to York Hospital signposted from Wigginton Road, and park in the multi-storey car park.  A new pedestrian exit has been created at the end of the car park. Follow the green line on the floor to the emergency department. Please see our website news for more information about arrivals to A&E.
