Bereavement Services

If you are visiting our page following the loss of a relative or friend please accept our sincere condolences at this time.

Bereavement is a time of grief and sorrow which is a natural and normal part of your loss. It is also, unfortunately a period during which a number of matters need to be dealt with.

All of this can prove bewildering and stressful so here at both York and Scarborough Hospitals we have full time Bereavement Services Officers who can provide practical help, support and information that we hope will help and assist you during this difficult time.

What we do

Once you have contacted bereavement services the following happens.  The Bereavement Services Officers will arrange for the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (MCCD) to be completed by a doctor from the ward, once completed a Bereavement Officer will contact you to book an appointment to collect this certificate, usually within 48hrs. Please be aware that the certificate may not be available straight away especially if it has been a weekend or bank holiday.

The Bereavement Suite at York has a Register Office located within it where it may be possible to collect the death certificate and arrange an appointment to register the death at the same time, rather than having to go to Bootham Registry Office.

The Bereavement Services Officer at Scarborough will provide you with contact details for the Scarborough Registry Office.

The Bereavement Services Officers will:

  • provide you with a Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (MCCD)
  • advise you on how to register the death
  • return any valuables and personal belongings left at the hospital
  • advise you on making arrangements to view your relative or friend
  • advise you on what to do next

You will also have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about these or any other matters or concerns.

The Bereavement Services Officers produce a booklet 'What to do during your Bereavement'.  This provides practical help and advice during the early days of your bereavement.  These are available from the wards, the Bereavement Services Suite or you can download a copy below.
