Volunteering at our Trust is a great way to support your local hospital, and we know our volunteers make a significant difference to our patients, carers, and staff every day.
All volunteer vacancies will be advertised on this website. Please click on the vacancies below to view the volunteer role description and online application form. Please note - we do not accept printed application forms.
Activity volunteers will organise activities for patients based around a chosen area of interest. This could be organising games, playing board games/card games, crafts, reading, singing, playing music, or simply having a conversation with patients.

We are looking for Ward Support Volunteers who can commit to a weekly session of two to four hours. The role will be specifically supporting patients on the Dementia and Elderly Care Wards, and applicants must be over 18 for this role. If you have experience or a keenness to support patients with dementia, we would love to hear from you.

We ask our volunteers to commit to a minimum of six months, with a weekly commitment of around two to four hours.
We welcome applications from anyone aged 16 and over. Please note that volunteers under 18 will need parental consent, and some volunteer roles are available only to those aged 18 and above.

After submitting an application, how long does it take to become a Trust volunteer?
It takes 8-12 weeks, including recruitment checks, an information session, and an induction session.
Do you offer work experience?
Our volunteering roles are designed to improve the patient experience, not for work experience purposes. We do sometimes offer work experience placements for those under 18. Find more details on work experience placements here.
To give yourself the best chance of success, please take your time completing the application form and tell us about your skills, interests, and why you would like to volunteer with us. We receive a high volume of applications, so unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that every application will be successful.
There are several stages in our application process, including an informal interview, recruitment checks, two references, a DBS check (provided free of charge for volunteers), and completion of mandatory online training.
Throughout the process, we will guide you on the information and documents required. It is important that these are provided promptly, as we may be unable to progress your application if the necessary information is not received.
A Chaplaincy volunteer provides a regular frontline chaplaincy presence on an assigned ward or is directed to visit specific individuals by the Chaplain.
The Chaplaincy Team at York and Scarborough NHS Teaching Hospital Foundation Trust welcome new volunteers from all faiths and none. Please read the documents below for more information on chaplaincy volunteering, including details on the role and a description of the Chaplaincy volunteer role. Though the application period is not yet open, we invite you to complete the expression of interest form to register your interest in volunteering with the Chaplaincy department. When the position opens, you will then receive an email asking you to complete an application form, after which you may be invited to attend an informal interview.

Friends of York Hospitals is a charity founded in 1953 to support the care and rehabilitation of patients from York Hospital, Nelson's Court, and White Cross Court.
The charity works in partnership with the Trust through volunteering and supports the work of York & Scarborough Hospitals Charity by fundraising for specialist equipment and projects to increase the facilities and care for patients and their families.
