Routine Opening Hours

Access to the laboratories is restricted to authorised personnel only.  All visitors must report to the reception on arrival. 

Out of Hours Service Provision

Haematology (including Blood Transfusion) and Biochemistry

Outside the routine laboratory hours Haematology (including Blood Transfusion) and Biochemistry operate a shift system where a minimum of one Haematology Biomedical Scientist and one Biochemistry Biomedical Scientist present in the hospital at all times. 

The BMS on duty are often extremely busy, please be patient and bleep them only when absolutely necessary. Please use CPD whenever possible.  The CPD reporting system is available on the hospital network and is updated with completed results every 15 minutes.

Microbiology

The Microbiology service is provided from York, the department offer an extended working day where there is a member of staff present in the hospital. 

Monday - Friday:  17:00 until 20:00

Saturday: 8:30 until 17:00

Sunday: 8.30 until 16:00

A Microbiology on-call service is provided to cover URGENT SAMPLES ONLY at all other times.  The Microbiology Biomedical Scientist can be contacted via the hospital switchboard '0' for urgent work.

Histology

The only samples processed and only in extreme emergencies are frozen sections. To request this a Consultant Histopathologist can be contacted via the switchboard.

Out of hours Work Please contact the Specimen Reception directly on 2625 (if advice is needed).

Routine work can be delivered directly without calling.
